JIS G3192 is the Japanese standard for the dimensions and mass of hot-rolled steel sections, and its H-sections come in three series: wide flange (flange width about equal to depth, e.g. H 300×300), medium flange (e.g. H 500×300) and narrow flange (e.g. H 400×200). Sections are written as depth × width × web × flange in millimetres. An H 300×300×10×15 is 300 mm deep, 300 mm wide, with a 10 mm web and 15 mm flanges, and weighs 93.0 kg/m (62.5 lb/ft).
JIS sizes show up well beyond Japan. You will see them on drawings from Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Korea and the Middle East, and on equipment skids and modules built in the region and shipped anywhere. The size names look simple. The catch is that the nominal size alone does not tell you the weight.
JIS H-beam designations explained
A JIS H-section has two names:
- Nominal size, like "H 400×400" or "400×400 series". This is a family, not a section.
- Actual size, like "H 414×405×18×28". This is depth H × flange width B × web thickness t1 × flange thickness t2, and it identifies one section and one weight.
Within one nominal series the actual sizes can be very different. The 400×400 series in the table below runs from H 388×402×15×15 at 140 kg/m to H 498×432×45×70 at 605 kg/m. Same nominal name, more than four times the weight. If a drawing gives only "H-400×400", you do not have enough to price it. Check the member schedule, then RFI.
Common ways the same section is written on drawings: "H-300×300×10×15", "H300x300x10x15", "H 300 x 300 x 10 x 15", and occasionally "H300×300" with the thicknesses in a schedule. Grades appear separately, usually in the general notes: SS400 (JIS G3101), SM490 (JIS G3106) or SN400/SN490 (JIS G3136) on building work.
Where these numbers come from
The tables are extracted from JFE Steel's Wide Flange Shapes catalogue ("Wide Flange Shapes (JIS G 3192 Metric Series)"). We cross-checked every section that also appears in Nippon Steel's Structural Shapes catalogue JIS H table: all 20 overlapping sections match on dimensions and mass. Every mass in the tables also checks against its area (mass = area × 0.785 for steel), within 1%. lb/ft = kg/m × 0.67197. Both mills note that some sizes are not rolled continuously, so confirm availability before you commit to a price.
These mill tables start at 175×175 in the wide series, 200×150 in the medium series and 300×150 in the narrow series. JIS G3192 also lists smaller H-sections (for example 100×100, 150×150, 200×100 and 250×125), which are common in light framing. Neither catalogue we used publishes them, so they are not tabulated here. Get their masses from your supplier's mill certificate or the standard itself rather than a distributor web page, where we found conflicting values for the same size.

JIS vs Chinese GB H-sections
China's GB/T 11263 H-sections use the same HW (wide), HM (medium) and HN (narrow) split and share many of the same dimension sets. The masses are not always identical. For the wide-flange sections that appear in both the JFE catalogue and our GB section library:
| Section (H x B x t1 x t2) | JIS kg/m (JFE catalogue) | GB HW kg/m (our GB library) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 175 x 175 x 7.5 x 11 | 40.4 | 40.4 | +0.0% |
| 200 x 200 x 8 x 12 | 49.9 | 50.5 | +1.2% |
| 200 x 204 x 12 x 12 | 56.2 | 56.2 | +0.0% |
| 250 x 250 x 9 x 14 | 71.8 | 72.4 | +0.8% |
| 250 x 255 x 14 x 14 | 81.6 | 82.2 | +0.7% |
| 300 x 300 x 10 x 15 | 93 | 94.5 | +1.6% |
| 300 x 305 x 15 x 15 | 105 | 106 | +1.0% |
| 350 x 350 x 12 x 19 | 135 | 137 | +1.5% |
| 350 x 357 x 19 x 19 | 154 | 156 | +1.3% |
| 400 x 400 x 13 x 21 | 172 | 172 | +0.0% |
| 400 x 408 x 21 x 21 | 197 | 197 | +0.0% |
The differences are small, up to 1.6%, but they are real. On 200 tonnes of 300×300 columns, 1.6% is 3 tonnes. Use the table for the standard the drawing actually names. If the title block says GB, see our GB steel sections chart. If it says JIS, use the JIS values.
JIS H-beams compared with W-shapes and HE sections
There is no one-for-one substitution, but for orientation: H 300×300×10×15 (93.0 kg/m, 62.5 lb/ft) sits in the same neighbourhood as a W12x65, which is about 12 in deep and 12 in wide at 65 lb/ft. The narrow series behaves like the lighter W-shape beam families. European designers would reach for HEA/HEB for the wide series and IPE for the narrow; the HEA vs HEB vs HEM guide and W-shape metric equivalents cover those. Swapping standards is an engineering decision. Price what is drawn.
Takeoff tips for JIS drawings
- Nominal-only callouts. "H-400×200" could be any of three sections from 56.1 to 74.9 kg/m. Find the full four-number size before you extend weight.
- Same depth, different series. H 390×300×10×16 (105 kg/m, medium series) and H 400×200×8×13 (65.4 kg/m, narrow series) are both called "400" beams in conversation. Read the width.
- Square-looking pairs. In the wide series there are often two sections with the same depth: H 300×300×10×15 (93.0) and H 300×305×15×15 (105). One number differs, and the weight differs by 13%.
- Built-up H. Fabricators in the region often weld H-sections from plate, written in the same H × B × t1 × t2 format. If a size is not in any rolled table, it may be built up, and you need to price plate and welding instead. Our plate weight chart helps there.
- Mixed standards. Imported skids and modules can mix JIS H-sections with ASTM pipe and EN plate. Our guide to steel takeoffs beyond AISC covers reading multi-standard sets.
Steelflo reads H-section callouts in this four-number format off your PDFs and puts a box on each one, so you can check every size against the drawing before it goes on the BOM.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does H 300x300x10x15 mean?
It is a JIS H-section 300 mm deep and 300 mm wide, with a 10 mm web and 15 mm flanges. It weighs 93.0 kg/m, about 62.5 lb/ft. The four numbers are depth, flange width, web thickness and flange thickness.
What is the difference between JIS wide, medium and narrow H-beams?
Wide flange sections have a flange about as wide as the section is deep and are mostly used as columns. Narrow flange sections are two to three times as deep as they are wide and are used as beams. The medium series sits in between.
Is a JIS H-beam the same as a Chinese HW section?
Many share the same dimensions, but the tabulated masses can differ by up to about 1.6% for the same size. Use the table for the standard named on the drawing.
How do I convert JIS H-beam weight to lb/ft?
Multiply kg/m by 0.672. For example, H 400×200×8×13 at 65.4 kg/m is about 43.9 lb/ft.
Why does the nominal size not match the actual depth?
A nominal series such as 400×400 groups several rolled sections with different thicknesses, and the actual depth and width change with thickness. The actual four-number size is the only one that tells you the weight.
