Base Plate & Anchor Bolt Takeoff Guide
A base plate takeoff has five line items per column: the plate itself (by weight), the anchor bolts (each), the nuts and washers (each — usually two nuts and one washer per bolt if leveling nuts are called out), and non-shrink grout under the plate. Pull the plate size and bolt callout from the column schedule or base plate schedule, multiply by the column count from the plan, and price plates per pound and bolts per each. What Do You Count in a Base Plate Takeoff?
For every column base, count:

Two things trip people up. First, anchor bolts are often furnished by the steel fabricator but installed by the concrete contractor — read the spec section (usually 05 12 00 vs. 03 30 00) to confirm who buys them, because "furnish only" still means they're on your takeoff. Second, the anchor bolt layout drives templates: most fabricators supply a plywood or steel setting template per bolt pattern, which is a labor line, not a material line, but it's real cost on a job with 15 different patterns.
How Do You Read a Base Plate Schedule?
On most commercial sets, base plate information lives in one of three places: a dedicated base plate schedule, a column in the column schedule, or the typical base plate details on the S-500 series sheets.

Read it left to right:
- PL 3/4" x 12" x 12" — thickness first, then width, then length. A plate callout of
PL 3/4x12x1'-0"is the same plate; mixed inch/foot notation is normal. - (4) 3/4"Ø F1554 GR.36 x 12" — four bolts, 3/4" diameter, ASTM F1554 Grade 36, 12" long. Length usually means embedded length or overall rod length — check the detail, because a "12 inch bolt" with a 3" projection is only embedded 9".
- 5/S501 — the detail tells you hook vs. headed bolts, projection, grout thickness, plate washer sizes, and whether leveling nuts are used.
The schedule gives you types. The foundation plan or anchor bolt plan gives you counts — count column marks on the plan, don't trust the schedule to tell you how many BP-1s exist. If the set has a separate anchor bolt plan (common on bigger jobs), reconcile it against the column plan; discrepancies between the two are one of the cheapest RFIs you'll ever write.
What Sizes Do F1554 Anchor Bolts Come In?
ASTM F1554 is the standard spec for anchor rods, in three grades: Grade 36 (36 ksi yield — the default for ordinary buildings), Grade 55 (usually with the S1 weldability supplement), and Grade 105 (high-strength, for moment-frame bases and heavy equipment). The spec covers diameters from 1/4" up to 4", but building work lives in a much narrower band:

Rules of thumb worth knowing at takeoff time:
- Embedment runs roughly 12 bolt diameters for Grade 36 (so a 3/4" bolt embeds about 9", a 1" bolt about 12"), more for higher grades — but always take the detail's dimension over the rule of thumb.
- Projection above concrete is typically 3"–6": enough for the grout bed, plate, washer, and nut with a few threads showing.
- End condition: hooked (L or J bend) on lighter bolts, headed or nutted on larger diameters — F1554 with a tack-welded or jam-nutted plate washer at the bottom is the common headed configuration now, since hooks pull out under high tension.
- Grade identification: F1554 rod ends are color-coded — blue for Grade 36, yellow for 55, red for 105. Handy on site, and a tell when reviewing shop drawings against the schedule.

Note that base plates price per pound, not per each — a $1.50/lb budgetary rate covers material plus burning and drilling for typical plates. Thick plates with milled surfaces or oversized holes for heavy moment bases deserve their own number.
How Do You Calculate Base Plate Weight?
Use the cross-section rule: steel weighs 3.4028 lbs per foot of length for every square inch of cross-section. For a plate, cross-section = width (in) × thickness (in).
Take BP-2 from the schedule above, PL 1" x 14" x 1'-2":
- Cross-section: 14 in × 1 in = 14 in²
- Weight per foot: 14 × 3.4028 = 47.6 lbs/ft
- Length: 1'-2" = 1.167 ft
- Plate weight: 47.6 × 1.167 = 55.6 lbs

What Gets Missed Most Often?
From reviewing real bids, the recurring misses:
- Leveling plates. Smaller columns (typically plates 4" thick and under, per OSHA-driven erection practice) often use a grouted leveling plate set before erection instead of leveling nuts. It's a second plate per column that hides in the typical detail, not the schedule.
- Embed plates. Embeds for ledger angles, dock angles, and brace connections live in concrete details and grade beam and footing schedules — sheets steel estimators skip. Every embed is plate plus headed studs, and a mid-size job can carry 50–200 of them.
- The second nut and the plate washer. Double-nutted bolts and 3/8" plate washers with oversized holes (standard on bigger bolts because base plate holes are drilled well oversize) double the small-parts count.
- Grout. One 50 lb bag yields roughly 0.4–0.5 CF. A 1-1/2" bed under a 14" x 14" plate is small, but 60 columns is 12–15 bags plus labor, and somebody's scope has to carry it.
- Galvanizing. Exterior and canopy columns frequently spec hot-dip galvanized anchor bolts — figure roughly 30–50% over the black-bolt prices above.
