Here's a free structural steel takeoff template for Excel — no email gate, no macros, no watermark. It has a line-item takeoff tab with BOM columns, automatic weight-per-foot lookups against a built-in database of 4,500+ steel sections across six standards, and a summary tab that rolls everything up to tonnage and a priced bid total.

Most "free" steel takeoff templates you'll find are either a screenshot on Scribd, a $12 Etsy listing with someone else's weights hand-typed into it, or a lead-capture form that trades your inbox for four columns and a SUM formula. This one is just a working spreadsheet. Use it, copy it, hand it to your apprentice.
What's Inside the Template
Four tabs:

The Takeoff tab is the one you live in. Each row is one line item from the drawings — same structure you'd use in a bill of materials. Two columns calculate themselves:
- Wt/ft — a VLOOKUP against the Sections tab. It normalizes what you type (strips spaces, ignores case), so
hss 6x6x1/4resolves the same asHSS6X6X1/4. If a designation isn't in the database, you getNOT FOUNDinstead of a silent zero. - Total Wt — Qty × Length × Wt/ft. It stays blank until all three inputs exist, so half-entered rows can't leak partial weight into your tonnage.
The Summary tab has two sanity counters most templates skip: a count of NOT FOUND lookups and a count of rows that have a section but are missing a quantity or length. If either number isn't zero, your bid total is wrong. Check them before you price anything.
How to Use It: Drawing Set to Priced Summary in 6 Steps
- Set your rates. Top of the Takeoff tab: steel $/lb and shop labor $/ton. The defaults ($0.85/lb, $950/ton) are placeholders — put in your real numbers.
- Work the drawings one sheet at a time. Mark up a printed set or PDF as you go — every member you've entered gets a highlight, every member without a highlight isn't in your bid yet. This is the discipline that separates a takeoff from a guess; the common takeoff mistakes list is mostly people skipping this step.
- One row per line item. Mark (B1, C3, L-101), section designation, quantity, length. Enter lengths in decimal feet: 28'-6" is 28.5. Record the sheet number in the Sheet/Detail column so you can trace any line back to the drawing during a bid review.
- Watch the Wt/ft column. If it fills in, the designation matched. If it says
NOT FOUND, check spelling against the Sections tab — the usual culprits are a missing X (W12 26), an O instead of a zero, or a fraction written as a decimal when the catalog uses fractions. - Check the Summary error counters. Both should read zero before you look at the total.
- Read the roll-up. Total tonnage, material cost, labor, 5% contingency (editable), bid total. Adjust contingency to match the job risk and your backlog.

The Built-In Section Weights: How the Lookup Tab Works
The Sections tab is the reason to use this template over a blank spreadsheet. It carries 4,500+ sections compiled from published catalogs across six standards, all normalized to pounds per foot so the roll-up stays in one unit system:

Metric-catalog sections (EN, BS, IS, GB, AS/NZS) are converted from kg/m at the standard factor, so an Australian UB and an American wide-flange sum into the same tonnage column without you touching a converter. Cold-formed SSMA studs and tracks are in there too, which matters if you quote light-gauge alongside structural.
Two honest caveats. First, weights are catalog values — verify against your supplier's current catalog for anything contract-critical, because some standards print nominal thicknesses that differ slightly from rolled actuals. Second, a lookup table can't tell you a wrong but valid designation: type W12X26 where the drawing says W21X26 and every formula happily computes the wrong answer. Where the Template Breaks Down
I'll be direct about the limits, because this is the part the Etsy listings don't mention.
The template starts at step 3. Finding every member on the drawings and counting them is 80% of takeoff labor, and the spreadsheet does none of it. On a 5-page shop building that's an afternoon. On a 40-page drawing set with framing plans, schedules, sections, and details, it's days — and every hour of manual counting is an hour of transposition risk.
Nothing cross-checks the drawings. If a beam appears on the plan and again in a section detail, nothing warns you that you counted it twice. If a schedule lists 14 of something and you only found 12 on plan, nothing flags the gap. The count-reconciliation habits in schedule vs. direct-label takeoffs exist precisely because spreadsheets can't do this.
Revisions are brutal. Rev B drops and you're re-reading every sheet, diffing against your rows by memory. Most estimators re-do the whole takeoff because trusting a manual diff is scarier than the lost day.
No audit trail per piece. A Sheet/Detail column says which sheet a line came from — not where on the sheet each of the 14 pieces was found. When a GC challenges your count, you're back in the drawings rebuilding your own evidence.

Template vs. Software: An Honest Comparison

The honest framing: if you bid a couple of small jobs a month, this template plus discipline is genuinely enough, and software subscription math doesn't work in your favor. The crossover comes when counting time — not calculating time — is what caps how many bids you can turn. Worked Example: A Small Mezzanine

Forty-two pieces, four line items, and the whole thing prices itself the moment the last length goes in. Note what the template caught along the way: the clip angles (L1) are 24 pieces at a foot each — 158 lbs that a "beams and columns only" takeoff would have dropped. Small stuff is where manual takeoffs quietly leak weight.
