Shop Painting and Priming Costs per Ton

The spread is that wide because coating is priced by surface area, not weight — and surface area per ton varies by a factor of five across member sizes. Get the prep spec and the square footage right and the coating line is easy money; miss either one and it quietly eats a point of margin. Here's how to price it.

What's the difference between shop primer and a paint system?

Shop primer is a single thin coat — typically 1.5 to 2.5 mils of alkyd or zinc-rich primer — whose job is to keep steel from flash-rusting between the shop and enclosure. It is not a finish. It is not long-term corrosion protection. Most interior structural steel that gets coated at all gets exactly this and nothing more.

A paint system is an engineered stack — commonly zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate, and polyurethane topcoat — specified for exposed or corrosive environments: exterior steel, wastewater plants, coastal work, architecturally exposed steel. Each coat has a dry-film-thickness requirement and often inspection hold points. The specification will reference SSPC standards, now maintained by AMPP (amp.org) after the SSPC-NACE merger — if the spec section quotes SSPC paint system numbers and DFT readings, you are pricing a paint system, not a shop coat, and the difference is 5 to 10 times the cost.

What do SSPC surface prep levels cost?

Add primer application on top: roughly $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot for a single shop coat including material, more for zinc-rich (the primer itself runs 3 to 5 times the cost of alkyd per gallon). So SP2 plus alkyd lands near $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot all-in; SP6 plus zinc-rich lands near $1.00 to $1.60.

The estimating trap: specs frequently call SP6 under a system that functionally only needs SP2/SP3. Bid what's written — but flag it. A substitution request that drops SP6 to SP3 on 200 tons of interior steel is worth $15,000 to $30,000, which is the kind of item that wins bids without cutting margin.

How much surface area does a ton of steel have?

The rule of thumb that converts per-square-foot rates into per-ton pricing. Lighter members have far more skin per pound:

A useful blended average for mixed commercial framing is 200 to 250 square feet per ton. Run the math both ways: 250 sq ft/ton at $0.30/sq ft for SP2-plus-alkyd is $75/ton — right inside the $40 to $90 range. But a job that's all stair stringers, lintels, and light miscellaneous framing can hit 400 sq ft/ton, and the same spec suddenly costs $120/ton. Per-ton coating allowances copied from your last beam-and-column job will underprice light-member work every time.

When does structural steel skip primer entirely?

More often than owners expect — and knowing when saves real money:

  • Steel receiving spray fireproofing (SFRM). Fireproofing bonds better to bare steel, and most SFRM manufacturers require either bare steel or a tested/compatible primer. Priming fireproofed steel is usually wasted money and sometimes a bond failure. On a typical mid-rise office frame, that's most of the tonnage.
  • Interior steel in enclosed, conditioned buildings. Under the AISC Code of Standard Practice (see aisc.org), steel is furnished unpainted unless the contract documents say otherwise. Dry interior steel doesn't rust meaningfully.
  • Concrete-encased or embedded steel. Concrete passivates steel; primer just weakens the bond.
  • Faying surfaces of slip-critical bolted connections. These must be bare or coated only with a tested Class A/B coating — mask them or leave them bare.
  • Field-weld zones. Leave 2 to 4 inches bare each side of field welds; burning primer produces fumes and weld defects, and the touch-up is on you.

Galvanized steel is its own path: hot-dip galvanizing replaces the primer question entirely and is priced per pound through a galvanizer, typically $0.25 to $0.60 per pound depending on piece size — a separate handoff with its own transport and scheduling cost that deserves its own line in the bid.

How do you take off finish requirements from drawings?

Finish callouts hide in three places: the general notes ("all steel shall receive one shop coat..."), the finish schedule, and per-member tags on plans and details ("HSS8x8x1/4 — GALV", "channel, primed"). The per-member tags are the dangerous ones — they override the general note for specific pieces, and missing a scatter of galvanized lintels and embeds on a primed job means eating the galvanizing.
