STEEL TAKEOFF SOFTWARE · UK & IRELAND
Steel takeoff software for UK tender drawings
SteelFlo is steel takeoff software that reads UK and Irish structural drawings: UB, UC, PFC, angles and hollow sections are found on every page of a PDF, boxed for your estimator to check, and exported as a bill of materials in kg/m and metres.
The section database covers 4,700+ sections across six standards, including the BS EN 10365 UK range, so a tender set that mixes UK sections with European or imported steel still reads correctly.
You get 3 free takeoffs with no card. Paid plans are priced in US dollars, from $399 a month.
Built for estimators who tender against tight programmes: upload the engineer's PDFs, review what the software found, and get a schedule you can price rather than a stack of highlighted drawings.

THE UK RANGE
The sections UK fabricators actually tender
A UK steelwork tender is mostly universal beams and columns, with channels, angles and hollow sections making up the secondary steel. These are the families SteelFlo reads and weighs, using the BS EN 10365 dimensions and EN 10210 / EN 10219 for hollow sections.
UB (universal beams)
From 127x76 up to 1016x305, matched from callouts like 457x191x67 UB on plans and schedules.
UC (universal columns)
From 152x152 up to 356x406, including the heavier column weights.
PFC
Parallel flange channels, 100x50 through 430x100, as used for trimmers, rails and edge members.
Angles (RSA, EA, UA)
Equal and unequal angles to EN 10056-1, whichever way the engineer prints the callout.
SHS, RHS, CHS
Hot-finished and cold-formed hollow sections by size and wall thickness.
Plates and flats
Plates by thickness and width. Plate callouts with no size printed are held out of the count for you to confirm.
HOW A TENDER RUNS
From the engineer's PDFs to a schedule
Drop the whole pack in as PDFs: general arrangement plans, framing plans, member schedules and notes sheets. The software scans each page, boxes every steel callout it finds, and works out which standard the drawings follow so the right weights are applied.
Your estimator then reviews. Confident detections can be confirmed in bulk, and flagged ones, such as a callout that might be a note or a section that is not in the catalogue, are opened one at a time with the drawing alongside. Every line on the final schedule links back to the box it came from, which helps when a quantity surveyor or main contractor queries a number.
Export a CSV bill of materials, a cut list, or a nesting order sheet that lays pieces onto stock lengths and shows waste. Or run the verified takeoff through the pricing engine with your own rates for material, labour and margin.
UNITS, CURRENCY, DRAWINGS
What to expect on metric and UK drawings
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Units | Metric drawings are reported in metric: kg/m, metres, kilograms. |
| Standards | UK sections to BS EN 10365, plus EN, AS/NZS, AISC, IS, GB and cold-formed in the same database. |
| Drawing format | PDF only. Text-based and scanned drawings both work; scans depend on quality. |
| Currency | Subscriptions and passes are billed in USD. Your own estimate rates are whatever you enter. |
| Accuracy | 95-99% with AI detection plus human verification. |
| Trial | 3 free takeoffs, no credit card. |
If you also quote European or imported steel, the guides on steel takeoff for UK fabricators, working beyond AISC and W-shape metric equivalents explain how the standards line up. Try the free calculator to price a few members without an account.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Straight answers
01Does SteelFlo handle UB and UC sections?
Yes. Universal beams and universal columns to BS EN 10365 are in the section database, along with PFC channels, equal and unequal angles, and square, rectangular and circular hollow sections. Callouts such as 305x165x40 UB or 254x254x89 UC are found on the drawing and matched to the right section.
02Does it report weight in kg/m and tonnes?
Metric drawings are reported in metric units. Section weights are in kg/m and your bill of materials carries lengths in metres and weights in kilograms, so tonnes are a divide-by-1,000 away if your tender sheet works that way. Internally the app stores imperial figures and converts for display, which is why the numbers you see are metric on a UK drawing.
03Is pricing in US dollars?
Yes. Subscription and One-Job Pass prices are billed in USD: Pro is $399/month, Business $599/month, and Enterprise from $1,499/month. There is no GBP price list at the moment. The three free takeoffs need no card, so you can test on a live tender before paying anything.
04Can it read UK structural engineer drawings?
It reads PDF drawing sets as issued by structural engineers and detailers: general arrangement plans, sections, member schedules and notes sheets. Text-based PDFs work best; scanned drawings are supported but depend on scan quality. Your estimator reviews every box before export.
05Does it recognise RSA angles and PFC channels?
Yes. Angles are matched whether the drawing prints them in UK style (for example 100x100x10 EA or L100x100x10) or in the longer European form, and parallel flange channels such as 230x90 PFC are in the database.
06How accurate is it on a tender set?
The published figure is 95-99% accuracy for AI detection combined with human verification. The AI boxes each member it finds, and anything doubtful is flagged for you to confirm or reject before the BOM is produced.
07Can I try it on a real tender before paying?
Yes. Every new account gets 3 free takeoffs with no credit card. Upload a set you have already priced by hand and compare the schedule.
